Most people walk in to their place of business and are very headstrong about getting their work done and over with so they can go home at the end of the day. They try to turn their computer on and nothing happens. Or, it turns on but is sitting on a blue screen. Or they are getting a thousand popups a minute and can’t navigate their way to where they need to get their work accomplished. Or any number of problems you call the I.T. (Information Technology) Department for.
When you get a level one technician, they try to diagnose the problem by asking you to do a few simple things: reboot the computer, visit any malicious sites recently, etc. They may come to you to take a look, or ask you to bring the computer to them if it is a laptop. They may have to give you a loaner, or you may have to go without while they figure out the root cause and fix the issue. This can always cause a backup within your department and organization as a whole.
You might think their sole job is just to fix computers throughout the day, but internally they are overseeing the entire operation from application control, botnet protection, and data loss prevention among so many other things. Their entire job is making sure everyone can do theirs. On top of fixing the computer systems throughout the company, they usually handle the A/V (Audio and Video) equipment for presentations and the phone systems on everyone’s desk. So while you are well within reason to inquire about the status of your broken computer, understand the pressure and priorities of the I.T. Department before getting impatient or frustrated about what you may see as a lack of quick enough results.
Another method that companies to combat the threats of an ever advancing technology suite is cloud computing, cloud security, and context aware security which secures and protects while managing all aspects of an employee’s internet usage. The number one threat to any organization is a virus as it spreads via email, flash drive, or shared computers like wildfire and can take down a perfectly healthy business and reduce it to just the I.T. Department working overtime until the threat has been abolished or all systems have been replaced.
While you might not have much interaction with the I.T. Department, they are more than just the people who work on your computer when you can’t figure something out. They run the entire facility and beyond by taking proactive steps to insure the safety of the machines, data, systems, servers, etc. while trying to keep up with the demand of employees who can’t understand that the internet is not to be trusted and to not open every email or click on every popup that pops up. These people are responsible for the daily operations running smoothly and deserve the respect and room to work efficiently.
